TO RECAP: This was posted recently, which is a rehash of this press release almost 5 years ago, and you can go here to learn more about 3-Nitro, it's discontinuance by Alpharma, sale to another company, and eventual withdrawal of use.
Now look, the FDA and Pfizer may claim that the levels of arsenic that this chemical was creating were "too low to have negative side effects", but I'm gonna call shenanigans. Because 1) I don't want ANY arsenic in my food, thank you, 2) I don't necessarily trust the FDA to be completely honest and forthcoming about negative effects from those that line their pockets, and 3) see #1.
So what's the takeaway here? I always encourage my clients to do their research. Buy your meats - all foods, really - certified organic and fresh. Buy local, and support small businesses and farmers. (My relatives have run the oldest farm in the country for about 370 years, I know how good farm-fresh is!) Buy humane; no, I don't buy that poorly treated animals are stressed and that stress manifests in the meat. What I do buy is that the upbringing of the animal likely speaks to how it was fed, and cleaned, and processed before I bought it. And then ate it. With my mouth, free of arsenic.
